I’ve often wondered this myself, actually. “Parent” seems too clinical, somehow! I’ve always assumed that if I had kids, they’d use my name or come up with a name for me, like they would with toys and friends, but I do want to know what others have chosen.
The original experience was of myself sitting in the steward and security area of Small Nations Festival on the Sunday morning with a hangover and some friends. Two children of about 8 come in, stop, look at me and loudly proclaim that I don’t look like a boy or a girl. I inform them that my gender is dinosaur. After about 5 minutes of probing questions most of the backstage crew present have joined in, confirming with various logical arguments that I am indeed a dinosaur. Small children leave to it things with sticks. Life goes on.
This was all lies, however. I’m blatantly and Octopus.
This comic delights me, because my BFF has been calling me her son’s Ankle.
hm, if ankle is the correct name for a transgen uncle/aunt, what word would be suited for a transgen parent – muddy or dammy? 😉

I’ve heard of ‘aka’ as a gender-neutral parental term, which I think is quite cool. 🙂
